JOHANNESBURG - Of the independent candidates that will stand in the May elections, veteran activist Zackie Achmat is the only one in the Western Cape.

He is no stranger to the political world.

Achmat was one of the most vociferous activists against Thabo Mbeki's HIV denialism in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
