City Power yet to assess damage caused by Joburg explosion

JOHANNESBURG - Power has still not been restored to the Joburg CBD.

City Power cut supply for safety reasons after Wednesday's shocking explosion.

It says it's waiting for emergency services to give them the go-ahead to assess damage to underground cables.

"We are suspecting that the structural integrity of the substation itself could have been affected," said spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

"We are still waiting for emergency services and disaster management to give us clearance so we can go in because for us to do the testing on the cables to see which feeders are still operational, which ones we can restore and which ones we may not, we need to do the testing.

"To do the testing there should be electricity running through the cabling infrastructure."
