DMRE to close all derelict mine shafts in Riverlea
JOHANNESBURG - Government has committed to closing all abandoned mine shafts in the Riverlea area by the end of September.
This was confirmed by Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, during the post-cabinet meeting media briefing.
The Riverlea area has been in the spotlight recently, with illegal miners terrorising the community.
Special task force police have been deployed to the area to crack down on zama zamas.
"The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has committed to close all derelit open mine shafts and mine holes in Riverlea by the end of September 2023, while finalising plans to close other derelit opened shafts and mining holes across the country," she said.
