Departments given 3 months to pay up municipal debt

JOHANNESBURG - Government departments have until December to settle their municipal debt or face the music.

Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa says this alone will help struggling municipalities.

It comes as national government steps in to intervene in Emfuleni.

The municipality has been struggling to pay its staff and electricity and water bills.

CoGTA will also approach Treasury to help struggling municipalities.
