Crumbling roads driving people to poverty

JOHANNESBURG - The country's roads are in a state of disrepair.

Most municipal routes, some as old as 70 years, are in need of complete resurfacing.

This is making transport costs higher, costs that are passed on to the consumer.

"There is far too much freight moving on the roads," said Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association.

"Our roads are carrying far more mass or weight than what they were designed for when they were built many years ago.

"The second problem is that they are not being looked after."
