CAPE TOWN - Sailing yachts is a popular luxury leisure activity, and it’s uncommon in the military.
But, to break with tradition, two female of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna Devadas and Roopa Alagirisamy have embarked on an expedition to sail more than 23,400 nautical miles in just eight months.
Their 56-foot vessel, Tarini, is in Cape Town after completing the fourth leg of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition.

Both Devadas and Alagirisamy have been sailing on this yacht since October last year.
They’ve travelled across the ocean and docked in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, before arriving in Cape Town.
Their voyage aims to highlight India's boat building capabilities as well as promoting women's empowerment.
eNCA’s Nobesuthu Hejana reports that while in the country, the Indian crew will participate in activities with the South African Navy, strengthening naval relations between the two countries.
