CAPE TOWN - It's the second term of the schooling year and many children still don't have access to safe, hygienic toilets.

The Department of Basic education missed its deadline to eradicate all pit toilets in public schools by 31 March.

One-hundred and fourty-one schools still use pit latrines, the majority of them in the Eastern Cape.

Ayanda Sishi Wigzell from Equal Education urges the department to work with them to eradicate this human rights crisis.
