JOHANNESBURG - Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, yet early detection and treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
Dr Omondi Ogude the Oncologist from the Mediclinic Institution in Sandton shared insights into understanding breast cancer and importance of awareness.
He says breast cancer can affect everyone but factors like genetics, lifestyle and environmental influences all play a role.
"Regular screenings, including mammograms for women over 40, are crucial," he said.
"Self-exams can also help women detect changes early, potentially leading to better treatment options and outcomes."
Ogude emphasises that advanced diagnostic tools, like 3D mammography and MRIs, improve detection rates, especially for women with dense breast tissue.
Treatments have also evolved, from targeted therapies to immunotherapy, offering more personalised options.
Ogude also highlights that lifestyle choices play an important role in breast cancer prevention.
While factors like age and genetics cannot be controlled, habits such as maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and limiting alcohol intake can help reduce risk.
