Waterval Maximum Prison boss survives 'attempted hit' - Thobakgale

JOHANNESBURG - National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale is visiting Waterval Prison in KwaZulu Natal.

This follows an assassination attempt on the prison head.

Thobakgale says the prison head was attacked as she was leaving the correctional facility to go home.

He says she was shot at more than six times. 

Thobakgale says the prison head survived the attack.

He says the incident happened on 30 October 2023.

"I came to visit her just two days after that at the hospital and I also had an interaction with the South African Police Services, and the investigation is at the advanced stage," he says.

"I also had a discussion with the management of this management area and they indicated that the incident has affected our members a lot and they I indicated that I will come back and that's why I'm here today to have a meeting with our members and to also have a meeting with the emergency security team." 

The attack comes just after another incident at Barberton prison, where an official was ambushed.
