JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko says the shortage of health inspectors in Gauteng affects food safety and environmental health across all levels.
This problem has left residents facing the risk of foodborne illnesses and other health hazards.
At the same time, Defence and Military Veterans Deputy Minister Bantu Holomisa, says deployment of soldiers to assist in the illegal spaza shop crisis would be futile unless all departments work together.
He says the departments of Home Affairs, Health and Police should come up with a solid plan, to tackle this issue.
Over 20 children have died in recent weeks, from eating suspected, contaminated food bought from spaza shops.
