Soshanguve mass shooting death toll rises to five

SOSHANGUVE, PRETORIA - A fifth victim of the Soshanguve mass shooting has died.

On Saturday, four people were found dead and partially burnt while eight others were wounded after a shooting at Marry Me informal settlement, north of Pretoria. 

The police have confirmed that one of the wounded has died bring the tally of the deceased to five.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a quarrel broke out between community patrollers and a group of five people on the street. The motive for the attack is still unknown.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the police are working tirelessly to locate suspects behind this fatal shooting.

This past week has been another one marred with fatal shootings in Gauteng.

Four people were also gunned down in Jeppestown.

Willem Els from the Institute for Security Studies, believes the country needs to overhaul its strategy for combating gun violence.

Crime expert Calvin Rafadi says the country's high levels of gun violence are worrying. He says communities need to do more to fight this scourge.
