JOHANNESBURG - IEC Commissioner Nomsa Masuku is not suspended and remains a part of the electoral body.
That is despite her appearance in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court on corruption-related charges.
The accusations stem from Masuku’s time as a Standard Bank employee between 2006 and 2013.
There she headed the Adopt a School Programme, which disbursed scholarships to qualifying pupils.
The 61-year-old is said to have siphoned those funds to accounts of a co-accused and family members.
Despite these allegations, Masuku remains a commissioner of the IEC.
In three sentences, the organisation acknowledges her “reported” arrest. It points out that the charges are from when Masuku did not work for the IEC and says it will monitor developments.
The organisation is not commenting beyond the statement.
Masuku handed herself over to the police, yet her arrest was delayed due to the elections.
Meanwhile, Masuku’s former employer, Standard Bank acknowledged the matter, confirming her departure in April of 2013.
While the bank will not comment further, it's committed to working with law enforcement officials.
Masuku was granted R20,000 bail, with the matter returning to court on 4 September.
