NEW YORK - South Africa's Ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool has to leave America before the end of Friday.
He was declared persona non grata and was expelled from Washington last week for comments he made about Donald Trump.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio lambasted Rasool for comments made on a webinar.
He slammed Rasool as a 'race-baiting politician' who is no longer welcome in the country.
Rasool made comments on US foreign policy and the Make America Great Again movement.
He was part of a panel discussing foreign policy hosted by the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola said the correct diplomatic processes regarding Rasool's expulsion were not followed.
Lamola said the government was going to comply with the decision and continue to engage with the US.
The decision by the US to expel Rasool further aggravated the diplomatic tensions between US and SA.
President Cyril Ramaphosa called on South Africans to tone down the welcoming Rasool home.
