Dept to visit Daveyton Skills School after pupils drown at discipline camp

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education Department officials will today visit the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni after two of its pupils drowned during a discipline camp near the Hennops River in Centurion.

The department's Steve Mabona says the school will have to account for the deaths.

"Its quite early now because we are visiting the school today as officials just to get to understand what happened before we take decisions. There must be accountability. The school needs to account, we need to know what happened," he said.

Two pupils from Daveyton Skills School in Benoni drowned yesterday during a discipline camp at Hennops River in Centurion.

It's alleged that one of the pupils suddenly ran towards a river near the campsite entrance after activities concluded.

A second pupil followed in an attempt to bring him back. Unfortunately, the pair drowned as a result.

Mabona spoke to eNCA.
