JOHANNESBURG - Sasol Oil has won a court battle against Transnet.
The High Court has awarded the company R3,9-billion in damages plus interest of around R2,3-billion after launching a dispute over pipeline tariffs.
Sasol took Transnet to court after it alleged that Transnet was in breach of its obligation to set pipeline tariffs for the transportation of crude oil in line with an agreement signed in 1991.
In breach of that agreement, Transnet was overcharging Sasol Oil for the transportation of crude oil for years.
Responding to these developments, Transnet says it intends to appeal the judgment handed down by the High Court.
It also says that there is uncontested evidence that Sasol made vast transport profits during the claim period and this judgment has enormous implications for the public purse and its operational obligations.
