JOHANNESBURG - Police are on a manhunt following a cash-in-transit heist on the N12, south of Johannesburg on Saturday.
A female driver was also hijacked and kidnapped, when she was made to drive the suspects away from the crime scene.
Four Fidelity guards were wounded during the robbery.
Police are hunting for 15 to 20 suspects, who escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
They are on the lookout for a black Golf 8 GTI, a blue BMW X6, a white Pajero and a black Range Rover, thought to be the getaway cars.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela says they are concerned that heists are expected to increase as we enter the festive season.
This is just one of several cash-in-transit heists in the past few weeks and comes as police bust what they believe was a syndicate operating in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal.
Five suspects were arrested and four suspects were killed earlier this week.
In the video below, Specialist investigator Mike Bolhuis says the state of South Africa’s economy could also be the reason for the spike in cash in transit heists.
He's blaming the SAPS for being ill equipped in dealing with the robberies.
