EAST LONDON - The state says it has incriminating evidence that EFF leader Julius Malema fired a real gun at the party's fifth birthday celebration in the Eastern Cape in 2018.

Malema is on trial with bodyguard Adriaan Snyman.
Their trial is nearing its conclusion, with both the defence and state making their heads of argument before Magistrate Twanet Olivier delivers her judgment.
Senior counsel Laurence Hodes argues that the state is clutching at straws in trying to prove that his client, Julius Malema, used a real gun and therefore endangered people's lives at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium more than six years ago.
The defence’s arguments come after state prosecutor Joel Cesar told the East London Regional Court that there was more than enough evidence from video footage, witnesses and investigations to show Malema was reckless when shooting in the packed stadium.
The defence will conclude its arguments on 23 January.
