Vaal floods leave victims homeless

JOHANNESBURG - Flood-hit stretches of the Vaal are calling for the area to be declared a disaster zone.

Over 300 people have been displaced by ongoing flooding.

Dozens of homes and business have been under water since the sluice gates at the Vaal Dam had to be opened to ease pressure.

Now, as residents try to pick up what’s left of their lives, the South African Weather Service is warning of further heavy rains as tropical storm Cyclone Freddy edges closer.

Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal are bracing to receive the brunt of the storm.
