JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Water and Sanitation is making progress in its efforts to reduce the Vaal Dam water levels.
As a result, two more floodgates were shut today.
However, eight of them remain open and the dam's capacity has since dropped from 120 to 113 percent.
The opening of the gates posed a major threat to communities on the Vaal River banks who were already dealing with substantial flooding.
Authorities have urged these communities to remain cautious as water levels remain high.
