Solo Restaurant shooting raises safety concerns in Sandton

SANDTON - Three people have been killed and four others injured in a shootout at a Sandton restaurant.

It's reported that the gunfight was started by businessman Siphamandla Mabonga,
after he was declined entry at Solo restaurant.

Mabonga has died, along with two of his bodyguards.

eNCA understands he was barred from entering at least three restaurants in the complex.

Thursday night’s shooting was similar to the January 2024 gunfight that ensued,
after Mabonga was again refused entry at an entertainment spot.

This time, it left the business man dead along with two of his bodyguards.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says Mabonga was out on bail for attempted murder and other cases.

"This figure, he was out on bail for such similar cases and attempted murder, in some of those clubs. There are a number of cases that he was out on bail for, so as you know, we arrest, we do our best to oppose bail, at the end of the day, we can’t guarantee to keep someone inside – people  have the right to bail," explained Masemola.

The shooting raises questions about community safety in Sandton, and other areas where late night gun attacks are frequent.

ENCA's Hloni Mthimkhulu filed this report.
