CAPE TOWN - Over 1,000 Gugulethu residents, including some who have been on the housing waiting list for 50 years, have finally been given the keys to their own homes.
The broader project was stalled due to issues with contractors, Covid-19 and more recently, extortion by the construction Mafia.
However, 14 years later, the City of Cape Town, with the help of provincial and national government is moving ahead full steam with a new contractor, to complete the project.
The City's waiting list currently stands at over 400,000.
Those who were lucky enough to get their keys were filled with emotion.
