DURBAN - Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, is worried about how the criminal justice system treats sensitive cases.
He is particularly concerned at how bail is considered in these matters. Mchunu says he will meet with Justice Minister Thembi Simelane as it is negating the police's hard work.
The concern stems from a case of a KZN minor, who has allegedly been repeatedly violated by his neighbour.
In November 2023, a young boy was violated, and the incident was reported to authorities in January. The suspect was arrested, charged and released on bail. Conditions included him relocating away from the victim, who lived nearby.
But, those conditions were breached and there was another violation of the boy in February.
The case was escalated to a regional court, where a prosecutor requested a psychological assessment. This led to the temporary withdrawal of charges and the release of the suspect.
The Minster says this was despite opposition to bail based on the risks involved.
