JOHANNESBURG - Amnesty International South Africa has voiced strong disappointment over the Basic Education Department's failure to meet its deadline for eradicating school pit latrines.
READ: Education Dept claims 90% of schools no longer use pit toilets
Despite removing 96-percent of the toilets, six children have tragically died, and many schools remain without safe sanitation.
Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, remains hopeful they will eventually achieve their goal of eradicating pit toilets.
Human rights groups and organisations like Section27 are demanding more urgency and transparency.
Section27 Education Attorney, Demichelle Petherbridge, discussed the progress on the project with eNCA.
