Outraged doctors slam govt threats to cut hours

JOHANNESBURG - Doctors are outraged, this as government threatens to cut overtime hours.

With hospitals stretched thin, doctors say any reduction in their overtime will further cripple the health system.

They say cuts will leave fewer doctors available in the evenings and for emergencies.

The Gauteng Health Department has attempted to ease concerns, insisting the move isn’t about cutting the workforce, but rather promoting a healthier work-life balance for doctors.

But patients at Gauteng hospitals argue against this and say the system is already at breaking point.

Meanwhile the Health Ministry insists a restructuring of overtime is necessary, as talks continue.
