KWANONGOMA - The Nongoma Local Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal has taken a Council resolution to change its name in honour of the late AmaZulu King.
The proposed name for the municipality is King Zwelithini Local Municipality, a move local authorities say will help attract tourists.
Nongoma is the official seat of the AmaZulu King, with most of the royal palaces located in the area.
The majority of the AmaZulu royal family members appear to be in support of the move.
Local authorities say it’s befitting to rename the municipality after the longest serving King of the AmaZulu, who spent his entire life residing in the area.
Some members of the royal family believe the proposed name change will push the municipality to move with speed in the provision of basic services.
The Mayor of KwaNongoma says all the political parties are in support of the name change proposal.
He hopes the move will be accelerated pending the finalisation of the legal and council requirement processes.
