Joburg council | Lesufi says coalition stands strong

JOHANNESBURG - The governing coalition of local unity remains intact, despite the resignation of Johannesburg mayor Thapelo Amad.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has denied that a scheduled motion of no confidence had anything to do with the resignation.

He says the coalition will crush any other motions brought against the executive.

Meanwhile, Amad says his resignation is about furthering the ruling coalition's priorities and not because of public opinion.

Amad came under criticism for claiming in a television interview that the city had procured a R9.5-billion loan despite not knowing the terms of the agreement.

These claims were later denied by the ANC in the city.

Amad says he leaves the job happy with the strides his executive has made in service delivery.
