Drop in murder rate, sexual offences cases

    CAPE TOWN - Police Minister Bheki Cele released the quarterly crime stats to Parliament.

    These figures cover criminal incidents identified and reported by the South African Police Service between 1 April and 30 June of the current financial year.

    Notably, there was a decline in both the murder rate and sexual offences cases.

    But attempted murder cases show an alarming increase.

    “For the current quarter we have recorded a decrease of murders of 196 counts, that is 3.1 percent reduction," said National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

    "Sexual offences showed a decrease of 239, that is a 2 percent decrease.

    "Then we had an increase in attempted murder."
