All hands on deck to fight Simon’s Town blaze

SIMON'S TOWN - Rescue services were forced to evacuate residents on Thursday night as wildfires ravage Simon's Town.

Firefighters are still working to stop flare-ups fanned by strong south-easterly winds.

About a hundred crews were deployed on Thursday morning.

Four helicopters, including a Black Hawk, waterbombed fires behind the Rocklands Christian Camp and the mountain slopes of Patridge Point and Durdoch Valley.

Jermaine Carelse from the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services said the fire area has been divided into five sections.

"Crews are actively fighting the fire near Miller’s Point, Castle Rock, Rocklands Farm, Dorian, and Victory Road, while ground crews from TMNP, VWS, NCC, and WOLF are assisting with hand tools," he said.

"The wind is still a major factor, but we are confident that the combined efforts from those on scene will provide positive results.”
