Ekurhuleni bus crash death toll rises to 16

JOHANNESBURG - At least 16 people have died in a collision on the R21 northbound near OR Tambo International Airport Interchange. 

The crash happened on Tuesday morning between a bus and a Light Motor Vehicle resulting in the bus driver losing control and the bus overturning.

This was confirmed National Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi. 

According to Msibi 12 passengers died at the crash scene and while four died at the hospital.

"Reports at this point indicate that 11 passengers suffered critical injuries and 24 sustained serious to moderate injuries," she said.

Scores of injured passengers, including the bus driver were transported to various hospitals for medical care.

Details on the cause of the accident are still unknown.

Four northbound lanes have been closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

This accident happens just a day after four school pupils died in a road accident on the N12 in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni. 

According to Gauteng Education Matome Chiloane MEC, the accident involved a collision between multiple vehicles.

One of the vehicles happened to be a private scholar transport which had been taking the pupils to school. 

He said two deceased siblings were in Grade 1 and Grade 3 at the Tom Newby Primary School in Benoni.

The two other victims were a Grade 1 boy from Rynfield Primary School, also in Benoni, and a Grade R boy from an ECD centre.
