Mpox cases rise to 28 in SA

JOHANNESBURG - The Health Department is calling for caution and continued safe hygiene practices as three new cases of mpox are confirmed in the country.

All three cases are from Ekurhuleni.

The first case, a 30-year-old male, was diagnosed with the mpox virus after recently traveling to Uganda.

Two other cases were detected through contact tracing.

All three patients are self-isolating and recovering at home.

Twenty-eight cases including three deaths have been recorded in the country since last May.

While mpox remains a global public health concern, it's still classified as a Public Health Emergency.

That means the risk of widespread transmission in South Africa is considered low.

But authorities say anyone who experiences symptoms such as a rash, fever, or swollen glands -- especially if they've recently visited affected regions -- should seek medical attention.
