JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is condemning the death of Mushin Hendricks.
Labelled the world's first openly gay Imam, Hendricks was gunned down while attending a wedding in Gqeberha.
Hendricks served a number of organisations and was an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights.
He also established the inclusive Masjidul Ghurbaah mosque, where there is no gender segregation.
The department says the country still experiences discrimination and hate crimes despite laws preventing it.
Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Steve Letsike is calling on police to swiftly find the perpetrators.
