Cape Town residents outraged over proposed 7.96% rate hike

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town residents are fuming over the city's proposed R84.1 billion budget for 2025/2026.

They are particularly upset about the 7.96% increase in rates for commercial, industrial, and residential properties.

The draft budget, titled “Invested in Hope,” is currently open for public comments until early next month.

City officials say that property rates are crucial for funding essential services, including metro policing, traffic management, disaster response, infrastructure development, and providing free or subsidized services to low-income residents.
