JOHANNESBURG - As an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, Dr Peter Friedland often had to help patients speak, breathe and listen.
But his life changed when he was given the opportunity to serve as a member of Nelson Mandela’s medical team.
Now, it was time for the good doctor to do the listening from the elder statesman. Friedland would go on to be instrumental in encouraging Madiba to update his hearing aid and break the stigma of wearing a device to help his listening.

Due to the trauma of being at the coal face of the aftermath of violent crime along with personal experiences, he made the difficult decision to emigrate to Australia.
He's written a book about his experiences and time with Madiba 'Quiet Time with the President'.
