35 years since Nelson Mandela's release from prison

CAPE TOWN - ANC stalwart and former finance minister Trevor Manuel detailed the events that unfolded when they were informed that Nelson Mandela was due to be released from the Victor Verster Prison.

Mandela walked to freedom on 11 February 1990.

Madiba’s release on 11 February 1990 marked the start of a new dispensation and movement towards freedom.

He was to become the first president of a fully democratic South Africa in 1994.

Madiba spent 18 years as a political prisoner on Robben Island and was later moved to other prisons on the mainland before his long-awaited release.

The Nelson Mandela Museum, in partnership with Robben Island and Iziko Museums collaborated to host the event commemorating 35 years since Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.
