Farmers fear food security threats due to power cuts

DURBAN - Farmers are sounding alarm bells of possible food security threats going forward.

They say blackouts are affecting their productivity and this could lead to less food production.

Some farmers may be forced to close down.

Poultry farmers say with various stages the 15 hours of heat and light needed for chickens is greatly affected and that impacts output and jobs.

As more darkness reigns, farmers want solutions.  

Farmers add that they need banks to also be lenient with them and continue investing in the industry.
