Collen Malatji has been elected president with Phumzile Mgcina his deputy president.

Political analyst, Yolokazi Mfuto, says to prove itself, the leadership will have to maintain autonomy and independence from the ANC.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver closing remarks at the conference later this afternoon.

Mfuto said, "it is very important for them to champion now the rights of young people, including in decision making."

"The ANCYL might still have a voice and relevance, it needs to intensify that voice."
