Youth Month Panel Discussion | Equipping young people to face today's realities

JOHANNESBURG - On June 16th, 1976, black pupils in Soweto protested against being taught in Afrikaans –which they saw as a language of the oppressor.
When police opened fire, scores were killed, and hundreds wounded.

This year, as South Africa commemorates Youth Month, young people face a new set of challenges.

Tshenolo Khaile and Gabrielle Matthew from the e Academy put together a panel of young leaders to discuss these issues.

It included Lethiwe Nkosi and Ekta Somera, both from a youth advocacy group called Youth Capital.
Also on the panel was Hector Dibakoane, a community activist, Kaitlin Rawson, a social media commentator, and Ewan Dawkins, a student at Wits University

Two key issues that emerged was the lack of jobs for young people,
and the need for an education system able to equip young people face today’s realities.
