WATCH | Communities encouraged to unite in fight against HIV

JOHANNESBURG - As World AIDS Day was celebrated on Friday, the government has encouraged every community to unite in the fight against HIV.

Some 39-million people are said to be living with HIV in the world in 2023, while 630,000 AIDS-related deaths were recorded last year.  

South Africa still has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. About 7.8 million people have been recorded as living with HIV in South Africa as of 2022.

Nkosi Johnson, South Africa’s famous child AIDS activist, was born with HIV and died at the age of 12 in 2001.

At the time of his death, he was the longest-surviving child born with HIV in the country.

His mother, Gail Johnson, continues his legacy through Nkosi’s Haven, which houses and supports HIV-positive mothers and children.
