Tongues wagging over additional zero-rated food items

JOHANNESBURG - The list of zero-rated food items is being expanded.

It will include edible offal, specific cuts such as heads and feet, dairy liquid blend and tinned or canned vegetables.

This to cushion the rising cost of living, because of the proposed VAT increase.

But the additional items have got tongues wagging.

People are questioning why some of these products have been considered which have no nutritional value and are full of preservatives.

We discuss with Dr Trevor Ngwane, senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg.
