However, South Africa’s teenage pregnancy rate remains one of the highest in the world. Adolescent pregnancy mostly affects girls between the ages of 10 and 19.
The youngest mother to give birth on New Year's Day was a 14-year-old girl in KwaZulu-Natal.
Visibility upset Health MEC for KwaZulu-Natal, Nomagugu Simelane is calling for the arrest of those responsible for impregnating the girls, as this constitutes statutory rape.
Vusi Khoza, the Director for Services to Families at the province's Social Development Department, discussed this.
