JOHANNESBURG - The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union has welcomed a Pretoria High Court ruling against the Board of Healthcare Funders’ proposal for Low-Cost Benefit Options.
Nehawu's Slindile Mbhele says the move to push stripped-down medical aid plans for low-income earners would have deepened healthcare inequality and undermined the goal of universal healthcare.
They insist the ruling is a step in the right direction for the NHI's realisation.
On the other hand, the Board of Healthcare Funders says the Act, in its present form, will not achieve government's objective of universal health coverage.
