DURBAN - South African municipalities are facing a massive debt crisis, with KwaZulu-Natal municipalities alone are owed a combined R59.5 billion.
Residents, businesses, and government departments continue to default on payments, putting essential services at risk.
In a bid to address this, the South African Local Government Association will convene a summit to explore solutions and enhance revenue collection.
Mazwi Madlala, a SALGA Senior Advisor says municipalities must also play their role and improve the poor credit control and debt collection strategies.
