JOHANNESBURG - The standoff between illegal miners and authorities still continues at the Stillfontein shaft in the NorthWest.
Police earlier cut off supplies to an abandoned shaft and said that illegal miners underground should come out and be arrested. .
Those remaining underground say they are unable to comply with the SAPS order to come up and surrender themselves, due to dehydration and starvation.
The Society for the protection of our constitution approached the Pretoria High Court, asking it to allow miners to resurface without obstruction from police.
Judgment on that matter is expected to be handed down on Monday.
A former South African Human Rights Commission Commissioner, Advocate Jonas Sibanyoni, has criticised government’s handling of the crisis.
