Food factories face scrutiny as chemical food poisoning cases rise

JOHANNESBUG - The recent chemical food poisoning cases and deaths of over 20 children have brought food manufacturers under scrutiny.

Although President Cyril Ramaphosa has given spaza shops 21 days to register, questions are being raised about the manufacturers themselves.

On 19 November, eNCA's Heidi Giokos visited the inner city of Johannesburg where officials were conducting inspections in supermarkets.

Meanwhile, in the City of Tshwane food safety programme are in full swing.

This is according to acting mayor, Eugene Modise, who says several spaza shops have been closed, and some owners arrested.

Modise added that a committee that will look into removing hazardous pesticides from circulation, protecting children, and preventing future outbreak has also been established.

With the chase for the 21-day deadline to register spaza shops underway across the country, the Township Economy Development Community of SA criticised the deadline.

According to the organisation this deadline has a legal loophole to foreign and illegal traders.

At the same time, the organisation says local traders have been disadvantaged and pushed out through the use of bulk buying, the organisation added.
