Durban Harbour | Container backlog costing the economy billions a day

DURBAN -The cargo backlog crisis at Transnet’s Durban port will likely be cleared in 2024. Transnet says it is implementing contingency plans to resolve this issue.

Approximately 70,000 containers are stranded on ships due to breakdown of equipment. The South African Association of Freight Forwarders says this situation is costing the country’s economy billions.

Director of SAAFF, Mike Walwyn says Transnet says need to fix their operations for the backlog to be cleared.

"We have daily and weekly meetings with Transnet using different platforms. There is a positive movement following the engagemens we have had.  This situation needs to be treated as an emergency," Walwyn explained.
