JOHANNESBURG - A report published in the Development Southern Africa journal shows that South Africa’s eight metros have seen very little growth in jobs over the last decade.

Factories in the manufacturing sector in all three Gauteng metros have been losing jobs.

The report was written by Justin Visagie and Professor Ivan Turok from the University of the Free State.

Professor Turok explained the research to eNCA's Francis Herd, saying: "We're trying to collect basic information. We have some ideas but joining the dots is not straightforward to get to the bottom of the problem.

"We want to first describe and characterise the scale of the issue and this is what is really new and different about our report, we're actually quantifying what has happened to jobs over the last decade."

Professor Turok said the infrastructure collapse crisis and political instability in major metros have been crucial factors in why economies in major cities have been relatively stagnant.
