JOHANNESBURG - Transport Minister Barbara Creecy is urging heightened road safety following a series of fatal bus crashes across the country.

On Tuesday, a tragic incident killed 14 people in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.

The minister has now directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation to arrange a meeting with bus operators to discuss ways to improve passenger safety.

RTMC CEO, Makhosini Msibi says, "The bus crashes have a serious impact on our road statistics particularly to the livelihood of the country."

"There will be further investigations in terms of engaging with the survivors and those who are possible witness so that we can determine the nature and the cause of the accident."

"On the 18th of March we will engage with all the bus companies to sensitise and ensure that the bus companies take responsibility of the road safety." he added.
