DURBAN - Transnet is hoping to clear the backlog of ships and containers at the Durban Port by early next year.

Over 70,000 containers are stranded at the port.

Transnet says it's implementing urgent interventions to ease congestion in Durban and Richards Bay.

It blames delays on adverse weather conditions and equipment availability.

Durban Port Terminals Managing Executive Earle Peters says they are working with the city to make sure that the congestion in and around the port is minimised to prevent slow moving traffic.
