Discussion | Study finds male infants more likely to achieve HIV remission

JOHANNESBURG - A ground-breaking study shows that male infants are more likely to achieve HIV cure or remission than female infants.

The research, carried out in collaboration with the Universities of KwaZulu-Natal, Oxford, and several others, has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Medicine.

Conducted in KwaZulu-Natal over several years, the study included around 300 mother-child pairs living with HIV.

The study has found that male infants were half as likely to experience vertical transmission.

We discuss this further with Lead UKZN Researcher Dr Gabriela Cromhout.
