JOHANNESBURG - Eskom has implemented Stage 6 blackouts until 5am on Monday.

The power utility says this is because there are insufficient emergency reserves and generation capacity.

Meanwhile, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Eskom executives held a briefing earlier to explain why rolling blackouts shot up to stage six.

Ramokgopa says as maintenance teams return units to service, power cuts will no longer be a regular occurrence.
